Think of the Children

“It’s actually ok!” Kids react to the Bert & Ernie controversy

The worldwide conversation over the “outing” of Bert & Ernie as a same-sex couple continues.

Now it’s kids turn to speak out. For those somehow spared by the media frenzy, the uproar began here on Queerty, with my interview of former Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman.

In our chat, Saltzman revealed that he always thought of Bert & Ernie as a “loving couple,” based on his own longtime relationship with film editor Arnold Glassman.

Sesame Street workshop released a statement denying that Bert & Ernie are gay, claiming puppets can’t by definition have a sexual orientation (tell that to Kermit & Ms. Piggy). The internet exploded with memes and reactions, ranging from celebration to tired accusations of queer culture corrupting children’s minds.

Now kids–the actual target audience of Sesame Street have shared their reactions in a new video posted to YouTube. In it, the kids struggle to understand just why so many adults would get upset over a children’s show, and over a relationship between puppets. They then go on to say that kids’ shows, especially one like Sesame Street, should feature plenty of gay characters and that same-sex relationships deserve the same kind of attention as straight relationships.

Kids say the darndest things.
